Mount Saint Mary Edged By St. Joseph’s-L.I. In Skyline Championship Game

Guillemette scores first half goal for the Knights

Newburgh, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Soccer team suffered a hard fought 2-1 loss on Saturday afternoon to St. Joseph's-L.I. in the Skyline Conference Championship game. Senior Melissa Guillemette (Branford, Conn.) scored the lone goal for the Knights in the first half.

Guillemette gave the Knights an early 1-0 lead when she potted her team leading 12th goal of the season in the 12th minute. She finished off a crossing pass from Alaina Neddermann (Prospect, Conn.) at 11:13 to give the Mount the early advantage. The helper was Neddermann's team leading ninth of the season.

The Golden Eagles responded quickly when Chelsea Bellini scored for the 13th time in 2015 just over two minutes after the Guillemette marker. She broke through the Mount Saint Mary backline and scored to the right side at 15:24 to close out the scoring in the half.

St. Joseph's finished the half with a 5-2 advantage in shots and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) finished the first period with a single save for the Knights.

The two teams remained deadlocked at a goal apiece until the 74th minute when Bellini struck for the second time in the game. Jessica Cordano chipped a ball into the box that found Bellini, who tucked her shot under the bar for the eventual deciding tally at the 73:38 mark of the match.

Shots in the second half were even at 4-4, with the Knight's best chance to tie coming in the 80th minute when a Neddermann shot was tipped over the bar by Golden Eagle keeper Katie McGarrell to keep St. Joseph's in front by a goal.

The Golden Eagles finished the game with a 9-6 advantage in shots overall and a 6-2 edge in shots on goal. Corner kicks were even at 3-3 in the contest and nine fouls were called against each team in the game.

Riley made three saves in the game for Mount Saint Mary, while McGarrell's only stop was on the Neddermann attempt late in regulation time.

Saturday's loss, Mount Saint Mary's sixth straight in the conference final, drops the Knights to 14-7-2 overall on the season.
