Melissa Guillemette (Branford, Conn.) posted her second straight two-goal game for the Knights and sophomore
Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) recorded her team leading fourth assist.
Mount Saint Mary fell behind 1-0 in the 16
th minute on Monday night, but quickly responded when Guillemette scored her fifth goal of the season at the 21:04 mark of the game. She collected a pass from Ribadeneyra and tallied to bring the Knight even at 1-1.
The game stayed even at a goal apiece until the final minute of the first period when the Scarlet Raiders broke the tie on a penalty kick. Sara Corson converted the kick for her 15
th goal of the season with nine seconds left in the opening stanza.
Rutgers-Newark finished the first half with a 9-3 advantage in shots and a 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) made four saves in the first 45 minutes for the Knights.
The Scarlet Raiders spread their lead to a pair of goals in the early stages of the second half when Corson potted her second goal of the game and her 16
th of the season in the 53
rd minute. Sunna Baig gave Corson the ball off a corner kick and she found the back of the net at 52:12.
Mount Saint Mary mounted a comeback late in the second period and got to within a goal when Guillemette scored for the second time in the game and for the fourth time in the team's last two outings in the 82
nd minute.
Emily Scheuer (North Babylon, N.Y.) picked up her first assist of the season on the play for the Knights.
Guillemette's goal was the final shot of the game on Monday, as Rutgers-Newark finished the contest with a 14-7 advantage in shots overall and a 9-6 edge in shots on goal. Guillemette posted three of the team's seven shots in the game and moved her team lead in points to 13 with her scoring output.
Riley closed the night with six saves for Mount Saint Mary after stopping a pair of shots after halftime. She now has 63 saves on the season for the Knights and holds a 1.21 goals against average. Diana Carvalho earned the win in goal for Rutgers-Newark with four stops.
Monday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 8-4-1 overall on the season. The Knights will return to action on Wednesday when they play host to league rival Sage, with both teams entering the contest unblemished in league play at 4-0. Kick-off at Kaplan Field is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
