Mount Saint Mary Takes Two Non-Conference Matches, Runs Winning Streak To Six

Sabatini records double-double against William Paterson

Wayne, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary College Women's Volleyball team ran its winning streak to six matches on Saturday with a 25-12, 25-12, 25-18 straight set win over York (N.Y.) and a 25-20, 25-20, 22-25, 24-26, 15-12 five set road triumph at William Paterson. Junior Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) closed the day with 26 kills, including 19 in the victory over the Pioneers.
 
In the opener against York, Mount Saint Mary hit .256 as a team and opened an early one set advantage after putting away 17 kills and hitting .444 in the first set against the Cardinals. The Knights used a 6-0 run late in the first frame to open a 22-10 lead, keyed by three kills from Sabatini.
 
The Knights surrendered just one kill in each of the first two sets and seven for the match, holding the Cardinals to a -.145 team attack percentage.
 
Junior Elizabeth Lavin (Hicksville, N.Y.) paced the Knights in Saturday's opener with eight kills and a .667 attack percentage. Jackie Survilla (West Islip, N.Y.) and Sabatini each put away seven winners for Mount Saint Mary, while Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.Y.) added five kills.
 
Kimberly Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) handed out 20 assists in the match for the Knights with Michelle Corona (Carmel, N.Y.) lifting a team-high 11 digs. Gries also led the team with five service aces in the match and added six digs, while William spaced the team with a pair of blocks.
 
Against the Cardinals, Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in kills 39-7 and in service aces 12-8. The Knights also finished the match with a slim 2-1 advantage in total team blocks.
 
Against the host Pioneers, the Knights jumped out to a 2-0 lead before William Paterson rallied to knot the match at 2-2. After falling in the fourth set, 26-24, the Mount jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the deciding stanza following three straight service aces from Kaitlin O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.).
 
William Paterson climbed back to within 4-3 early in the frame and then used a 3-0 run to slice the Mount's lead to 13-12 late in the fifth set. Following an Issell Garcia service ace, Mount Saint Mary received kills from Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.) and Williams to close out its sixth straight victory.
 
Sabatini led the team with 19 kills, while hitting .292 in the match. She closed a double-double effort with 11 digs and added two aces and a block. Cirigliano contributed 12 kills for Mount Saint Mary with Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) chipping in with nine winners, three blocks and a pair of aces.
 
Gries and Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) each handed out 26 assists in the match, while Jenifer Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) lifted 23 digs. O'Brien paced the team with six aces, while Williams and Bones each added three blocks.
 
William Paterson was led by 20 kills each from Nicole Spicer and Erin Roach with Kendall Caruso handing out a match-high 47 assists to go along with 17 digs.
 
Mount Saint Mary closed out its second win of the day with a 61-55 advantage in kills and a 16-9 edge in service aces. The Knights doubled up the Pioneers in total team blocks on Saturday 6-3.
 
With two wins on Saturday, Mount Saint Mary improves to 6-14 overall on the season. The Knights will return home on Tuesday when they welcome Staten Island to the Kaplan Center. Match time with the Dolphins is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
