Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) scored a goal and added an assist and junior
Matthew Minniter (Mahopac, N.Y.) recorded a pair of assists as the Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team scored a key 3-0 conference win over visiting Purchase on Wednesday night.
The Knights struck early on Wednesday with the only goal they would need in the game when
Eric Hayes (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) potted his third goal of the season in the third minute of play. Minniter put a ball into the box and Hayes beat the keeper to push the Knights in front by a goal just 2:58 into the contest.
Freshman
Michael Blaauboer (Latham, N.Y.) added his fifth goal of the season in the middle stages of the first period to help the Knights build a two goal advantage heading into halftime. Ennis fed Blaauboer with a pass inside the box and he finished it off at the 27:20 mark of the contest for the two goal advantage.
Heading into the intermission, Mount Saint Mary held the advantage in shots 7-2 and in corner kicks 3-1. Senior
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) made a single save in the opening 45 minutes for Mount Saint Mary.
The only goal of the second half came in the 74
th minute when Ennis deflected in a free kick for his fifth tally of the campaign. Minniter started the play and Ennis got a foot on the free kick to close out the scoring at 73:58.
With their offensive output on Wednesday, Blaauboer and Ennis are tied for the team lead in goals with five, with Blaauboer leading Ennis by three points for the team lead with 15 in his rookie campaign.
Peluso rounded out the game for Mount Saint Mary with four saves to earn his second shutout of the season and the sixth blanking of his career. Esteban Aguilar finished the night with seven saves for the visiting Panthers.
For the night, Mount Saint Mary held the edge in shots 15-5, shots on goal 10-4 and corner kicks 3-2.
Wednesday's win moves Mount Saint Mary to 5-9-1 overall on the season and to 4-2-0 in league play. The Knights will return to action on Saturday when they travel to league rival Old Westbury for a 1:00 p.m. kick-off with the Panthers.
