Montclair, N.J. – The Mount Saint Mary Women's Volleyball team saw its seven match losing streak stopped on Saturday with a 25-19, 19-25, 24-26, 16-25 loss to Manhattanville before falling 18-25, 16-25, 18-25 to host Montclair State. Senior
Jennifer Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) posted 27 digs in the opener against Manhattanville and totaled 31 for the day.
The Knights jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after registering 16 kills in the opening set. Mount Saint Mary used a 7-0 run in the middle of the set led by three kills from
Jennifer Bones (Camden, Del.) to open a 14-9 lead. Mount Saint Mary did not trail again in the set and used kills from Bones and
Megan Williams (Glenmont, N.T.) to close out the set.
After the Valiants evened the match at a set apiece, The Knights saw Manhattanville rip off the final five points of the third set to rally from a 24-21 deficit to claim the third frame and move in front 2-1. Two kills from Asia Reid and a pair of Mount Saint Mary miscues fueled the Manhattanville rally.
Manhattanville closed out the win with 11 kills in the fourth frame and took advantage to of nine Mount Saint Mary attack errors to close out the victory.
Bones led the offensive attack in the match with 11 kills, with
Angelia Cirigliano (Newburgh, N.Y.) adding nine kills and six digs. Williams rounded out the match with five kills and a team-high three total blocks.
Greis led all players in the match with 27 digs, adding five assists and a service ace.
Kristen Maddock (Medford, N.Y.) led the team with 18 assists against Manhattanville and
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) added five service aces and 16 digs.
In the match, Mount Saint Mary finished with a 46-45 advantage in kills and a 13-10 edge in service aces. The Knights hit .092 in the match against a .200 effort from the Valiants.
Against Montclair State, the Mount hit .187 as a team against an efficient .368 effort from the Red Hawks. Montclair State finished with 49 kills in the match, including 18 in the second set, against just 10 attack errors.
Nicole Spinelli (Wantagh, N.Y.) and
Elizabeth Lavin (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the Knights with five kills apiece, with Sabatini adding four winners and a team-high nine digs.
Kimberly Gries (Hicksville, N.Y.) led the team with 17 assists, while Bones and
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) paced the team with two total blocks each.
Montclair State was led by 11 kills a .360 attack percentage from Courtney Matlock, with Kimberly Matlock pacing all players with 34 assists. Nikki Senopoulos led all players with 19 digs to go along with five service aces.
Overall, Montclair State finished with a 49-32 advantage in kills and an 8-5 advantage in service aces.
Following Saturday's results, Mount Saint Mary falls to 7-16 overall on the season. Next up for the Knights is a trip to Bard on Wednesday night. Match time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
