Patchogue, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College Men's Soccer team dropped a Skyline Conference road game at St. Joseph's-L.I. on Saturday afternoon by a score of 2-0. Senior goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) made a season-high eight saves and sophomore
Eric Hayes (Westhampton Beach, N.Y.) led the team with four shots.
The game winning goal on Saturday came in the 28
th minute when St. Joseph's Enrique Tirado potted his first goal of the season on a penalty shot at the 27:18 mark of the contest. The Golden Eagles added an insurance marker in the 35th minute on a Justin Heredia goal to give them a 2-0 lead heading into halftime.
In a tightly contested first 45 minutes, the Golden Eagles outshot Mount Saint Mary 10-8 and held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks. Peluso finished the frame with five saves for the Knights and St. Joseph's net minder, Avery Gomez, made three stops prior to the break.
Mount Saint Mary outshot St. Joseph's 9-4 in the second half, but could not solve Gomez. The St. Joseph's keeper was forced to make four saves to preserve the victory, while Peluso blanked the Golden Eagles after halftime, making three more stops.
Mount Saint Mary finished the game with a 17-14 advantage in overall shots, while the Golden Eagles finished with 10-7 edge in shots on goal. Hayes was one of six Knights with at least two shots with
Michael Zanfardino (Saint James, N.Y.) added three shots.
The Golden Eagles closed the game with six of the nine corner kicks on the afternoon.
Saturday's loss drops Mount Saint Mary to 4-9-1 overall and to 3-2-0 in Skyline Conference play. The Knights return to action on Wednesday night when they welcome Purchase to Newburgh. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
