Box Score FREDONIA, N.Y. – A remarkable turn of events late in Friday night's contest led to the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (2-0-1) stealing a 1-0 victory over Fredonia State University (2-1-0) in the first night of the Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic, hosted by Fredonia at University Stadium.
Junior defender
Ivan Dorador (Valley Stream, N.Y.) was given a yellow card, along with Fredonia's Russell Catalano, but Dorador was given a free kick opportunity as a result. Dorador connected on the free kick at the 70:50 mark of Friday's contest to put the Knights up, 1-0. Just 24 seconds later, the game was stopped due to severe weather, and was eventually called with 18:46 left to play. NCAA rules state that any game stopped after 70 minutes is considered an official game. Since the Knights were up by a goal just 74 seconds after the game became official, they were awarded the victory.
Junior goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) earned his first victory and second shutout of the season, making three saves in 71:14. Sammy Torrelli suffered the loss in the shortened affair, matching Peluso with three stops, but allowing the late winning goal.
Fredonia fired off eight shots and put three on goal on Friday, while the Knights shot the ball seven times and put four on target. The host Blue Devils also accounted for two of the three corner kicks in the game.
The Knights look to go 2-0 in the Blue Devil/Clarion Hotel Classic when they take on Buffalo State College tomorrow, Sept. 6, at 2:30 p.m. at University Stadium.
