PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – Junior forward
Melissa Maini (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored her third goal of the year early in the first half, and it proved to be all the Knights would need as the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team (5-3, 2-0 Skyline) took down St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (1-7-1, 0-2-0 Skyline), 1-0, Saturday afternoon at Danzi Stadium.
Maini's goal came off a feed from senior midfielder
Renee Schultz (Waldwick, N.J.) at the 13:22 mark in the first half. Freshman goalkeeper
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.), with help from strong back-line play, helped keep the Golden Eagles off the board the rest of the way to secure the win.
Riley picked up her fifth win and third shutout of the season on Saturday, stopping five shots in the process. Golden Eagle keeper Katie McGarrell made an impressive 16 saves, but allowed the early goal to Maini to suffer the loss.
Freshman defender
Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) and senior forward
Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) matched with five shots and four shots on goal to lead the Knights to a 23-13 total shot differential, including a 17-5 shots on goal advantage, in Saturday's matchup. They also earned five corner-kick opportunities to four for their opponents.
The Knights return home on Wednesday, Oct. 1, to take on Drew University in a non-conference matchup at Kaplan Field. The game is set to begin under the lights at 7 p.m.
