Gianotti Doubles Up as Women’s Soccer Defeats Drew, 3-1

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior forward Nicole Gianotti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) scored twice, including the game winner, to lead the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team (6-3) to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Drew University (3-6) Wednesday evening under the lights at Kaplan Field.

Gianotti gave the Knights a 2-1 lead in the 49th minute after chipping in a rebound off a header from freshman defender Bridget McKeever (Wallkill, N.Y.). She scored an insurance goal for the Knights in the 86th minute after a long cross near the right corner from junior forward Melissa Maini (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) to put the Knights up by a pair. Gianotti also scored twice back on Sept. 20 in the Knights' 2-1 victory over SUNY College at Old Westbury.

Drew's Emma Campbell put the Rangers up, 1-0, at 23:09 after beating several defenders and finding herself alone with freshman goalkeeper Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.). Freshman forward Dava Fortunato (Scarsdale, N.Y.) knotted the game up at 1-1 on a successful penalty kick in the 29th minute for the first goal of her collegiate career.

Riley made one save in the winning effort on Wednesday. Drew's Andee Higgins suffered the loss after taking over in the second half and allowing a pair of goals. She also stopped eight second-half shots. Sara Nash allowed a goal and made three saves after starting and playing the first half for the Rangers.

The Knights' defense stepped it up after allowing the early goal, holding Drew to just five total shots on the evening. The Knights fired off 26, including 14 on goal. The Knights also drew nine corner kicks and did not allow the Rangers to have one.

The Knights get back to Skyline Conference play on Saturday, Oct. 4, when they host Sarah Lawrence College for their first-ever Skyline matchup against one another. The game is set to kick off at Kaplan Field at 1 p.m. The Knights still also be celebrating Senior Day prior to the game.
