NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior forwards
Marissa Segreto (West Islip, N.Y.) and
Nicole Gianotti (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) each scored twice to lead the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team (4-2, 1-0 Skyline) to a 5-1 victory in its Skyline Conference opener against SUNY College at Old Westbury (3-3-1, 0-1-0 Skyline) Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field.
Both Segreto and Gianotti had five-point afternoons as each scored twice and assisted a goal to fuel the Knights to victory on Saturday. The 1-0 start improves the Knights' regular season Skyline winning streak to 27 games dating back to the 2010 season.
Senior midfielder
Renee Schultz (Waldwick, N.J.) got the party started in the 11th minute, redirecting a corner kick from junior midfielder
Melissa Guillemette (Branford, Conn.) to put the Knights up 1-0. Gianotti doubled the lead at 21:54 with the follow-up of freshman defender
Allison Jones' (Merrick, N.Y.) saved shot. Jordan Schildt got one back for Old Westbury in the 25th minute off a cross from Stephanie Maybie to cut the deficit to 2-1, which it would remain through halftime.
Segreto tallied her first of the afternoon just 83 seconds into the second half after slipping one past the keeper off an assist from senior midfielder
Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) to put the Knights up 3-1. She scored again at 60:59 on a breakaway shot off the keeper which was sparked by a feed from Gianotti to increase the lead to three goals. 21 seconds later, Segreto returned the favor, setting up Gianotti for her second score of the game and put the Knights up 5-1.
Freshman goalkeeper
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) made two saves and allowed just a single goal to earn her first career Skyline victory. Old Westbury's Caitlin Thomas shouldered the loss after making six saves and allowing five goals.
The Knights held a significant advantage in possession and managed to fire off 24 shots to just four for the Panthers. They also earned all nine of the game's corner-kick opportunities.
The Knights finish up a four-game home stand on Wednesday, Sept. 24, when they host William Paterson University in a non-conference matchup. The game is set to begin under the lights at Kaplan Field at 7 p.m.
