NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (3-2-1) suffered its second-straight loss on Saturday, dropping a hard-fought 2-1 defeat to Rutgers-Newark (5-2) at Kaplan Field.
Rutgers-Newark's Charlie O'Connell redirected a free kick from Nick Bucciero in the 70th minute to put the Scarlet Raiders up, 2-1. The Knights had a chance to tie in the final minutes when sophomore midfielder
Brett Fucheck (Newburgh, N.Y.) lined up for a deep free kick from the far left wing. Despite the distance, Fucheck's free kick nearly set up a header to tie the game, and also nearly beat the keeper to the right end of the net, but it was saved to end the Knights' threat.
Raphael Araujo put the Scarlet Raiders up 1-0 in the 24th minute after running down the left wing and beating the keeper inside the box for the score. Senior forward
Sean Barton (Wallkill, N.Y.) knotted the game up at 52:11 when he redirected sophomore midfielder
Mike Zanfardino's (Saint James, N.Y.) cross from the corner into the net for his first score of the year.
Matt Broomall earned the victory for Rutgers-Newark, allowing one goal and stopping two shots. Junior goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) suffered his second loss of the year after making six saves, but allowing a pair of goals.
Araujo fired off a game-high eight shots to lead the Scarlet Raiders to a 19-9 edge over the Knights in total shots for the afternoon. The Knights took the advantage with six corner kicks to five for their guests.
The Knights open up Skyline Conference play next Saturday, Sept. 20, when they host Farmingdale State College in a rematch from the 2013 Skyline Conference Championship game. The contest is set to kick off at 3 p.m. from Kaplan Field.
