Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (1-0-1) and local rival Vassar College (1-0-1) played a very evenly matched contest on Sunday, resulting in a scoreless draw in the Knights home opener at Kaplan Field.
Freshman goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) made his first start donning Knight blue and shut out the visiting Brewers across 110 minutes of play, stopping five shots in the process. Vassar's Adam Warner matched Peluso with a shutout, making four saves.
Both teams were equal with 12 shots apiece in Sunday's contest. Vassar held a slight edge with six corner kicks to just five for the Mount.
The Knights' best opportunity came in the 78th minute of the game when junior midfielder
Adam Palumbo (East Islip, N.Y.) found himself in the box and past the keeper with possession of the ball. He fired for the right side of the net, but a Brewer defender jumped in the ball's path and narrowly made the save to keep the Knights off the board. Late in the first overtime period, senior midfielder
Chris Marchese (Cold Spring, N.Y.) headed a ball near the left corner of the box, but he caught the left post.
The Knights will next play on Friday, Sept. 5, when they head up to Fredonia, N.Y. to participate in the Fredonia Blue Devil Classic. They will take on the tournament's host, Fredonia State University, Friday evening at 7 p.m. They will next play Buffalo State College Saturday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
