Box Score 2 ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team closed out the opening weekend of the season at 2-2 overall after splitting its matches on day two of the Oneonta Invitational on Saturday. The Knights defeated Lehman College (1-3), 3-1 (25-18, 20-25, 25-17, 25-16), in their early match, but fell to Hartwick College (3-1), 3-1 (25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 25-22), to close out the tournament.
Junior outside hitter
Kayla Kurka (Islip, N.Y.) was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player and was picked for the All-Tournament Team after recording 45 kills and a hitting percentage of .219 across the Knights' four matches.
Kurka led the Knights with 12 kills in their victory over Lehman. Senior middle blocker
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) provided seven more, while sophomore setter
Claire Scully (Bloomfield, N.J.) dished out 36 assists. Freshman libero
Chelsea Barberan (Fishkill, N.Y.) made her first start for the Knights and picked up a match-high 17 digs.
The Knights played well despite the loss in their match against Hartwick. Kurka led the team once again with 15 kills, but sophomore outside hitter
Rachel Sabatini (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) was close behind with 14 of her own. Barberan blew her first game out of the water with 36 digs in the loss, while junior right side
Kaitlin O'Brien (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a nice defensive game as well with 21 digs. Scully provided another 34 assists in the Knights' final match of the tournament.
The Knights return home to host Ramapo College on Wednesday, Sept. 3 in their home opener at the Kaplan Center. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m.
