Big Mount Saint Vincent Second Half Drowns Women’s Basketball in 73-51 Defeat

Box Score

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A 7-0 run to open the second half turned a three-point lead into a 10-point lead for the College of Mount Saint Vincent (16-6, 8-3 Skyline), which led to a big half for the Dolphins en route to a 73-51 victory over the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (4-17, 4-7 Skyline) Wednesday evening at the Kaplan Center.

The Knights played a solid first frame, trailing by just three points at the break after the Dolphins scored the final five points of the half. However, they came out cold in the second stanza, turning the ball over on their first three possessions that allowed the Dolphins to quickly take a 10-point lead. Efficient play led to the visitors running out to a 23-point lead with 11:30 still left to play, and they never surrendered their 20-plus point lead the rest of the way.

Mount Saint Vincent was led by Kelly Fraser, who picked up a double-double with 13 points and 14 rebounds. She did most of her damage in the first half with 11 points and 13 boards. Brittany Carroll turned in 14 points for the Dolphins, while Brittany Lee added 10 points and seven rebounds.

Senior forward Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) refuses to cool off, scoring 21 points and pulling down 10 rebounds for her ninth double-double of the season and her sixth in eight games. Junior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) banked 10 points and grabbed six boards. Senior forward Jessica Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) had a nice game on the boards with eight rebounds.

The Knights shot 32.1 percent on 18-of-56 shooting from the field on Wednesday. The Dolphins made 37.3 percent (25-of-67) of their shots, including 14-of-34 (41.2 percent) in the second half. The visitors held a 52-39 advantage in rebounds in their victory. The Dolphins scored 27 points on 27 Knight turnovers and had a 28-12 edge in points in the paint.

The Knights return to action on Saturday, Feb. 15, when they travel to NYU-Poly for a Skyline Conference matchup with the Fighting Blue Jays. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
