PATCHOGUE, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team (1-4, 1-1 Skyline) lost for the first time in Skyline Conference play this season on Saturday, falling to St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (3-4, 2-1 Skyline) by a score of 64-27.
Both teams struggled in the first half, but the Golden Eagles managed to take a seven-point lead into halftime after Fernando Vazquez chucked up and drained a desperation three at the buzzer. The home team opened the second frame with a 16-0 run, which was halted on a three by sophomore guard
Austin Stewart (New Paltz, N.Y.) with 11:49 to play. The Eagles put together a 14-0 run later in the half to go up, 58-24, eventually running their lead out to 37 before the final horn.
The Golden Eagles shot 49 percent (24-of-49) in Saturday's rout. Andy Laurent led the home team with 18 points, while Billy Heenan pulled down a game-high 13 boards. Nick Gallina led St. Joe's with six assists.
Junior guard
Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.) had a team-high six points in the Knights' loss. Freshman forward
Gerard Nocera (Holmdel, N.J.) grabbed a team-high eight boards. Sophomore guard
Robert Taylor (Wingdale, N.Y.) led the Knights with two assists and added five points. The Knights were good on just 20.8 percent (10-of-48) of their shots from the field on Saturday.
The Knights will look to put this one behind them, as they quickly get back to action on Monday, Dec. 8, at the Kaplan Center. They will host Centenary College (N.J.) with a 7 p.m. tip-off.
