TACOMA, Wash. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's basketball team (0-1) opened its season late Friday evening in a matchup with the University of Puget Sound (1-1) as part of the Doug McArthur Classic hosted by Puget Sound. The Knights fell to the host Loggers, 82-53, as the young Knights team was overwhelmed by an experienced Puget Sound squad on its home court.
Before fouling out late in the second half, junior guard
Stephen Steyer (Staten Island, N.Y.), the team captain this season, set a new career-high with 22 points on 6-of-10 shooting. He also a team-high grabbed six boards and two steals. Freshman guard
Daniel Wolff (Holtsville, N.Y.) had an impressive debut with 10 points.
The Loggers hot from the field all night, improving as the game went on. They shot 56.3 percent (27-of-48) for the game, including a field goal percentage of 68.4 (13-of-19) in the second half.
The Knights scored on their first possession of the game to take a 2-0 lead, but the Loggers tied on the next play and never looked back in Friday evening's late affair for those on the East Coast. The home team took a 37-24 lead into the break, and performed even better in the second frame by outscoring the Knights, 45-29, for the 29-point victory.
The Loggers took advantage of the Knights' mistakes, scoring 22 points off turnovers. The Knights held their own from close range, though, matching the Loggers with 28 points in the paint.
The Knights play one more game out in Tacoma, as they face off with Pacific Lutheran University in their finale in the Doug McArthur Classic. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. EST (4 p.m. PST).
