NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (1-3) cut a 19-point deficit down to just two points within the final minute of the game, but Manhattanville College (2-1) managed to hold on late to pick up a 67-61 win over the Knights Friday evening at the Kaplan Center.
The Knights trailed, 57-38, with eight minutes left to play in regulation. The Knights then went on a 17-2 run cut Valiant lead to just four points at 59-55 with 2:53 on the clock. The Valiants got two points back, but the Knights then scored four straight to get within two with 46 seconds remaining. Manhattanville's Bri Pabon succeeded on a pair of free throws, but sophomore guard
Marisa Delzio (Brewster, N.Y.) ran right down the court and sank a layup to cut the deficit back to two. Pabon was good on another two free throws on the next possession, and was sent to the line again after the Knights failed to score, making another two to put the game out of reach at 67-61.
Pabon scored a game-high 28 points to lead the Valiants to victory on Friday. Alyson Caiazzo also had a stellar game, scoring 16 points and pulling down 18 rebounds for a double-double.
Delzio was one of three Knights to score 13 points on the evening. She was joined at that mark by senior guard
Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) and freshman forward
Bridget Kelly (Farmington, Conn.). Kelly fell just short of a double-double, leading the Knights with nine rebounds. She also tied with Delzio for the team lead with four assists on the evening. Senior forward
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) added 11 points for the Knights.
The Knights led for much of the first half in Friday's loss, forfeiting the lead with 3:17 to play in the opening frame. The Knights were eventually outscored in the first half, 35-31, but led for about 12 minutes in the period.
The Valiants held a 45-30 edge in rebounds on the evening. They also outscored the Knights in the paint, 38-20, and in second-chance points, 18-8.
The Knights get back to work on Tuesday, Nov. 25, when they take on SUNY New Paltz for the second time this season. They play the later game of a men's and women's basketball doubleheader at the Hawk Center, tipping off with the New Paltz women's basketball team at 7 p.m.
