Women’s Basketball Knocks off New Paltz, 69-66

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (2-3) made a big run down the stretch to overtake SUNY New Paltz, 69-66, Tuesday evening at the Hawk Center. The Hawks beat the Knights back on Sunday, Nov. 16, by a score of 61-40, in the consolation round of the Emmanuel College Invitational Tournament in Boston, Mass.

The Knights trailed for much of the game, but managed to keep the deficit within single digits the entire way before taking a late lead with 4:30 to play. New Paltz's Ashley Riefenhauser then drained a three to put the Hawks back up by one, but it was all Mount Saint Mary the rest of the way.

Junior guard Nicole Scicutella (Massapequa, N.Y.) dropped a three on the Hawks to take the lead back, kicking off a 7-0 run to put the Knights up by six points with 1:41 on the clock. The Hawks got back within two points on a three by Colleen Ames with 46 seconds left, but the Knights were able to hold off the home team in the final seconds to hang on for the win.

Sophomore guard Marisa Delzio (Brewster, N.Y.) picked up a double-double with 13 points and 11 assists. She also blocked two shots and registered two steals. Senior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) sank nine free throws to reach a team-leading 15 points on the evening. Senior guard Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) came off the bench to match Delzio with 13 points.

Kit Small had a big game for the Hawks, scoring 18 points and pulling down 14 boards for a double-double. Ames added another 12 points for the home team, and three different Hawks dished out three assists apiece.

The Knights were good on 24-of-55 attempts (43.6 percent) from the field Tuesday evening, while holding their opponents to just 31.6 percent shooting from the field. The Knights were able to pick up the victory despite being outscored, 21-8, in second chance points.

The Knights will look to turn Tuesday's victory into a winning streak when they get back to work on Tuesday, Dec. 2. They host Vassar College in non-conference action at the Kaplan Center in the early game of a doubleheader with men's basketball immediately following. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m.
