Women’s Basketball Drops Season Opener to Emmanuel, 62-43

BOSTON, Mass. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (0-1) opened its season on Saturday, participating in the first round of the 31st Annual Emmanuel College Invitational Tournament. The Knights fell to host Emmanuel (1-0), 62-43, and will take on SUNY New Paltz on Sunday in the consolation game.

The Saints opened the game with a 12-2 run in the first 6:35 of the game. They went on to take a 32-17 halftime lead thanks to Jennifer Bujnowski's six points and 10 rebounds in the opening frame. The Knights played a closer second half, but the Saints lead proved to be too much to overcome as the Knights fell by 19.

Bujnowski finished up with a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds on the afternoon. Alexis Ezell also had a solid day with 11 points and nine boards.

Senior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the Knights with nine points on the day, adding a pair of rebounds and a steal. Freshman forward Jessica Rini (Seaford, N.Y.) had eight points and three boards for the Knights, while freshman Bridget Kelly (Farmington, Conn.) led the Knights with seven rebounds.

A big difference in the matchup was the Saints' big day under the glass. They outrebounded the Knights, 59-38, including 31 offensive boards, leading to a 22-2 advantage in second-chance points. They also outscored the Knights in the paint, 32-10.

The Knights will take on the Hawks from New Paltz in the consolation game of the Emmanuel Tournament tomorrow, Nov. 16. Tip-off is scheduled for 12 p.m.
