Women’s Basketball Falls to New Paltz, 61-40, in Emmanuel Invitational Consolation Game

BOSTON, Mass. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (0-2) dropped the consolation game of the 31st Annual Emmanuel College Invitational Tournament to SUNY New Paltz (1-1) Sunday afternoon at the Jean Yawkey Center by a score of 61-40.

The Knights played the Hawks close to open the game, but a 9-0 run halfway through the first put New Paltz up, 23-9. They went on to close out the half with a 36-22 lead over the Knights. Both teams played a better defensive half in the second frame, but the Hawks outscored the Knights, 25-18, to grab the 21 point win.

Kit Small had eight points and a game-high 14 rebounds to lead the Hawks. Courtney Irby had a team-high 12 points, and Shannan Walker led the Knights with four assists and three steals.

Senior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led the Knights with 10 points on the afternoon, adding five rebounds. Senior guard Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) contributed nine points, while sophomore guard Marisa Delzio (Brewster, N.Y.) had seven points, seven rebounds and a pair of assists.

Turnovers were an issue for the Knights on Sunday, as the Hawks took advantage for a 26-11 edge in points off turnovers. New Paltz's bench was also very productive, adding 32 points.

The Knights and Hawks will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 25, in the Hawk Center at New Paltz. The Knights will look to bounce back on Tuesday, Nov. 18, in their home opener against Hunter College at the Kaplan Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
