NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Sophomore midfielder
Matt Minniter (Mahopac, N.Y.) found the back of the net for the second time with 71 seconds remaining to lead the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (8-2-1, 5-0 Skyline) to a 2-1 Skyline Conference victory over the College of Mount Saint Vincent (5-8, 2-3 Skyline) on a brisk Thursday evening at Kaplan Field.
Minniter was set up with a wide-open right corner of the net off a cross from the left side from senior midfielder
Chris Marchese (Cold Spring, N.Y.) to score the game-winner late in the second half. Minniter scored the opening goal of the game just 2:31 into the first half off a feed from junior forward
Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) to give the Knights an early 1-0 advantage.
Dennis Reyes, the Skyline's leading scorer, knotted the game up at a goal apiece at 68:08 after dribbling into the box and beating the keeper one-on-one to get the Dolphins on the board.
Junior goalkeeper
Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) made four saves to pick up the victory. Mount Saint Vincent's David Melchor suffered the loss after allowing two goals, but stopped six shots in the process.
The Knights outshot the Dolphins, 14-10, on the evening, including eight shots on goal to five for the visitors. The Knights also earned all eight corner-kick opportunities that the game saw. The game got a bit chippy in the second half, as each team picked up a pair of yellow cards.
The Knights get back to work on Saturday, Oct. 11, when they host St. Joseph's College (L.I.) and look to keep their undefeated Skyline record intact. The game is set to begin at 1 p.m. at Kaplan Field.
