Men’s Soccer Suffers First Skyline Loss of the Season to St. Joe’s (L.I.), 3-1

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (8-3-1, 5-1 Skyline) suffered its first Skyline Conference loss of the season, and saw its five-game winning streak come to an end, as the Knights fell to St. Joseph's College (L.I.) (5-11, 3-3 Skyline), 3-1, Saturday afternoon at Kaplan Field. This marks the ninth straight loss the Knights have suffered to the Golden Eagles in the regular season, dating back to the 2006 campaign.

The Golden Eagles took an early lead in the 21st minute when Justin Heredia connected with a header off a corner kick from Chris Hall to put the visitors up, 1-0. They doubled the lead in the 60th minute on Alex Guadagno's score off a cross from Heredia.

The Knights showed some life late in the second half when junior forward Michael Ennis (Carmel, N.Y.) fired off a shot from the top of the box to beat the keeper and cut the lead in half with 5:28 left on the clock. The hope of a comeback faded quickly, as Heredia notched his second score of the game less than two minutes later to put the Golden Eagles up, 3-1.

Avery Gomez picked up the victory for St. Joe's, needing just one save. Junior goalkeeper Austin Peluso (Farmington, Conn.) stopped three shots, but allowed three goals to shoulder the loss.

The Knights were outshot, 11-4, in Saturday's contest, and allowed four corner kicks to the Golden Eagles while only earning two for themselves.

The Knights take a break from Skyline play, as they next take on the Hawks from nearby SUNY New Paltz on Tuesday, Oct. 14. The game is set to begin under the lights of Kaplan Field at 7 p.m.
