WILKES BARRE, Pa. – Senior defender
Jordyn Catapano (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) fired off one of her typical long-range blasts, and found the back of the net in the 103rd minute to lead the Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team (8-4) to a 1-0 double-overtime victory over King's College (Pa.) (3-5-2) Wednesday evening.
Freshman defender
Destiny Ribadeneyra (Maybrook, N.Y.) took a corner kick for the Knights early in the second extra period, and the ball went off one of the Monarchs and caromed out to Catapano standing 25 yards from the goal. She one-timed the ball after a couple bounces and pinned it into the upper right corner of the net to ignite the celebration for the Knights. This was Catapano's first-career game-winning goal and the Knights' first overtime game of the season.
Freshman goalkeeper
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) did not need to make a single save to pick up her fourth shutout and eighth victory of the season. King's backup goalkeeper Gabrielle Murphy stopped 13 shots, but allowed the winner in double overtime to suffer the loss.
It was only a matter of time before the Knights broke through in Wednesday's contest, as they significantly outshot the Monarchs, 27-3, including 23-3 in regulation. The Knights also earned eight corner-kick opportunities, while their hosts had three.
The Knights take on another non-conference opponent in Lehman College when they next play on Monday, Oct. 13. The game is set to begin under the lights of Kaplan Field at 7 p.m.
