NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's soccer team (7-4) dropped a tough defensive battle to Rutgers-Newark (8-4-1) by a score of 1-0 Monday evening at Kaplan Field.
Paige Lazar received a cross from Sara Corson from the right wing, setting her up one-on-one with freshman goalkeeper
Mary Riley (Newburgh, N.Y.) with space in front of the net. She redirected the pass into the left side of the net at 62:03 to give the Scarlet Raiders the only goal of the game.
Riley suffered the loss by allowing the lone goal in Monday's contest and making three saves. Rutgers-Newark keeper Veronika Tueros picked up the shutout victory with six saves.
Senior midfielder
Vanessa DiSilvio (Massapequa, N.Y.) led the Knights with three of their 16 shots on the evening. The Knights' 16 shots were more than double that of the Scarlet Raiders, who managed just six. The game did not feature many corner kicks, as the Knights earned the only two opportunities of the game.
The Knights return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 8, when they travel to Wilkes-Barre, Pa. for a non-conference matchup at King's College (Pa.). The game is set to begin at 7 p.m.
