NEWBURGH, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (2-12, 2-3 Skyline) put together its first winning streak of the season by defeating Skyline Conference rival NYU-Poly (2-11, 0-4 Skyline) on Monday at the Kaplan Center for its second victory in as many games.
Senior forward
Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) put together a dominant game, scoring 20 points, pulling down 14 boards and dishing out five assists, all team highs on Monday. Her 10-point, 12-rebound second half helped the Knights blow out their opponents with a 35-15 second-frame advantage.
After taking a 38-30 lead into the break, the Knights flew out of the gate in the second half with a 14-2 run over the first eight minutes to push their lead to 52-32. They went on another big run, outscoring the Fighting Blue Jays 13-4 over the next six minutes to improve the lead to 65-36 and put the game out of reach with just 6:37 to play.
Junior guard
Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) kept her hot streak going with 16 points and four boards. Junior forward
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) did the same with 13 points and eight rebounds, as did senior forward
Jessica Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) with 11 points, seven boards and four assists.
Poly was led by Tabitha Larsen who scored 13 points on the evening. Alyssa D'Apice followed with 11 points and a game-high six assists. Sabrina Fletcher also put in a good effort with seven points and nine rebounds.
The Knights shot 40.6 percent (28-of-69) from the field Monday evening, including five three-pointers. They also shot 12-of-15 (80 percent) from the charity stripe. The home team took a big edge in rebounds, pulling down 51 to the Jays' 33. The dominant rebounding effort was reflected by a big 30-12 differential in points in the paint.
The Knights return to action on Saturday, Jan. 25, when they take a trip to SUNY College at Old Westbury. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m.
