OLD WESTBURY, N.Y. – Five different Knights scored in Saturday's contest, as the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team (6-2-0, 2-0-0 Skyline) took down conference The College at Old Westbury (4-4-1, 0-1-1 Skyline), 5-1, in Skyline action at Panther Park.
Junior forward
Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) and senior midfielder
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.) paced the Knights with a goal and an assist each on the afternoon. Garcia's score was his team-leading 11th of the season, while Lockwood's assist was his team-leading eighth.
Senior defender
Rob Thompson (West Babylon, N.Y.) got the scoring started for the Knights in the 11th minute, when he headed a free kick off the foot of freshman forward
Nick Blomfield (Warwick, N.Y.) from midfield past the keeper to give the Mount an early edge. Freshman defender
Brett Fucheck (Newburgh, N.Y.) followed with another netter just four minutes later off a cross from junior defender
Steve Ehresman to give the Knights a 2-0 lead.
The Panthers got on the board in the 30th minute when Adan Cruz-Valasquez beat senior goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburgh, N.Y.) on a break, but that was the last goal the Panthers would score on the afternoon.
In the 35th minute, Garcia picked up a goal off a feed from Lockwood to send the Knights into the break with a 3-1 lead. Garcia assisted the Knights' fourth goal when his free kick was headed into the net by senior midfielder
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) in the 61st minute. Lockwood got his score in the waning minutes of the game, finishing from the top of the box at the 84:58 mark.
The Knights held a slight edge in shots on Saturday, taking a 16-15 lead in the win. The Mount also earned seven corner kicks to just two for the Panthers.
The Knights continue Skyline play on Tuesday, Oct. 1, when they travel to the College of Mount Saint Vincent. The action is set to kick off at 7 p.m.
