Matt Garcia (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored three times on Saturday afternoon, leading his team to a 4-1 victory in Skyline Conference play against NYU-Poly. The Mount moves to 5-2 overall (1-0 Skyline) while the Fighting Blue Jays fall to 0-4-1 (0-1 Skyline).
Senior
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J) got the Knights off to a strong start when he scored in the 5th minute of the game. From there, Garcia would mark the first hat trick of his Mount career. Garcia's first of three goals came in the 15th minute when he headed the ball into the net after it had deflected off of a NYU-Poly defender.
The offense on both sides was silenced until NYU-Poly freshman Carlos Fidalgo scored the Fighting Blue Jays' only goal of the day in the 42nd minute. A free kick from the right side by Andres Torres set Fidalgo up for a header that snuck past the Mount's senior goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.).
The next two goals were netted by Garcia. He scored in the 77th minute when the ball got loose on the left side, resulting in a breakaway. Garcia would round out his hat trick in the 80th minute on an assist from junior
Steve Ehresman (Whitestone, N.Y.).
Darling recorded seven saves to earn the victory.
The Knights return to action next Saturday, September 28 when they travel to Old Westbury to take on the Panthers. The game time is set for 12:00 p.m.
