NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College held Farmingdale State College without a field goal for more than seven minutes in the second half and gradually pulled away for a 53-43 victory in Skyline Conference action on Saturday. The Knights wrap up the regular season at 17-8 overall (13-1 Skyline) and will serve as the top seed in next week's conference tournament, hosting Farmingdale (10-12, 8-6 Skyline) in the opening round.
Trailing by five at the 13:39 mark, Mount sophomore
Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) picked a perfect time to record her first basket of the game and drained back-to-back three-pointers to give the Knights a one-point edge. Farmingdale tied the game with one-of-two at the line, but wouldn't score again until the six-minute mark. During that time, Mount Saint Mary pieced together an 8-0 run to take a 44-36 lead.
The Rams closed to within seven with 2:37 remaining, but junior
Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) answered with a three-pointer from the corner to push the lead back to double digits. Farmingdale wouldn't threaten down the stretch and the Knights settled for the 10-point win.
Perrone led the Knights with 17 points on 8-of-15 from the field. Sophomore
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) added 12 points, while Romao added 10 points, all coming in the second half. Sophomore
Rottisha Lewis (Norwalk, Conn.) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.
For Farmingdale, junior Nicky Young (Queens, N.Y.) hit on 8-of-20 from the field for a game-high 18 points. She was the only Ram to reach double figures.
