Box Score RIVERDALE, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College scored 17 of the game's first 19 points on the way to a 63-35 drubbing of the College of Mount Saint Vincent in Skyline Conference action on Sunday. The Knights improve to 16-8 (12-1 Skyline), while the Dolphins (6-17 overall) remain winless in the Skyline at 0-12.
Sophomore
Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) bookended the game-opening 17-2 run with three-pointers, the first at the 18:34 mark and the second at 7:41. Senior
Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) also hit a triple during the run and sophomore
Amanda Smith (Dayton, Ohio) competed an old-fashioned three-point play at the 12:46 mark.
The Knights dominated the opening half with their defense, not conceding a field goal over the course of the first 13 minutes. Mount Saint Vincent would manage just three field goals in the opening 20 minutes and trailed, 32-9, at the break.
The Dolphins scored the opening basket of the second half, but Mount sophomore
Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) hit a jumper to spark a 7-0 run for the Knights that pushed the lead to 28. Mount Saint Mary would lead by as many as 30 down the stretch before closing out the 28-point victory.
Candarelli, in her first start of the season, led the Knights with 17 points on 8-of-15 from the field. She also added eight rebound, two steals, and a block. Romao hit on 6-of-8 from the floor, including 4-of-5 from three, to finish with 16 points. The Mount shot 44.8-percent as a team and scored 31 points off of 27 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers.
Sophomore Kelly Fraser (Staten Island, N.Y.) led Mount Saint Vincent with 11 points. The Dolphins shot just 20.4-percent from the field and connected on just 1-of-9 from three.
The Knights have the week off before hosting Farmingdale State College on Saturday, February 16. Game time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. in the Kaplan Center.
