Knights' Late Run Falls Short as Women’s Basketball Falls to Staten Island, 76-68

Box Score

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – After trailing by as much as much as 23 points late in the first half, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team (0-6) managed to cut the deficit to just a point in the second frame, but the Knights could not complete the comeback, falling to the College of Staten Island (5-1), 76-68, Tuesday evening at 'The Tank.'

Trailing 58-41 with 13:36 left in regulation, every Knight on the floor caught fire and the team put together a 17-1 run to cut the difference to a point. The Dolphins switched to a more conservative approach to go up 64-60 before Nikki Fabozzi hit a crucial three for the home team. The teams traded baskets and the Knights were able to climb back to within three points, but late free throws kept the Dolphins ahead and clinched the win for the hosts.

Megan Myhre led the Dolphins with 21 points on the evening. Lisa Galasso had a nice all-around game, recording a double-double with 11 points and 12 assists. Melanie Johnson also picked up a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 14 boards.

Junior guard Lauren Romao (Brick, N.J.) scored 14 second-half points to set a new career-high with 22 points on the evening. Junior forward Natalie Candarelli (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) also set a new career mark with 20 points, adding eight rebounds to her effort. Senior forward Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) earned her first double-double of the season, banking 12 points and pulling down 12 boards.

The Knights outshot the Dolphins from the field, succeeding on 41 percent of their shots compared to 35.1 percent for the home team. Neither team was strong from the charity stripe, as the Knights made 12-of-22 (54.5 percent) of their free throws and the Dolphins hit 11-of-23 (47.8 percent).

The Knights return to action on Friday, Dec. 6, when they take on another City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) opponent in Hunter College. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. in New York City.
