POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - Playing in their third game in just four days, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team dropped a 2-0 decision to host Vassar College on Monday afternoon. The Knights move to 1-2 on the season, while the Brewers improve to 2-0.
Vassar struck with their first goal of the day in the 35th minute, as sophomore Tom Weichert (Capistrano Beach, Ca.) buried a shot in the low corner off a pass from junior Evan Seltzer (Philadelphia, Pa.). With under a minute to play before the half, Weichert added his second of the day to extend the Brewers' lead to two, 2-0. Weichert ran towards the left corner and cut towards the box before ripping a shot that deflected off the post and in the goal past Mount keeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.).
The Knights showed improvement in the offensive end of the field, managing to take 17 shots, 8 of which were on goal. Down by two and feeling the need to score, the Mount's best opportunities to score were a series of seven shots over the first 11 minutes of the second half. Offensively, senior
Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.) and freshman
Alex Tolman (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.) led the charge, each placing two shots on goal.
Darling finished the game with seven saves, while Vassar keeper senior Gary Clauss (Colchester, Conn.) earned the shutout with eight saves.
The Knights return to action on Thursday, September 6, as they travel to Albertus Magnus College. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
