Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Strong second half shooting led the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team to a 65-49 win over SUNY College at Old Westbury in a critical Skyline Conference match-up. With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Knights improve to 18-3 overall and 9-1 in Skyline play. The Panthers move to 14-6 on the season and 8-3 in conference play after the loss.
With the Knights up by four, 4-0, more than five minutes into the half, Old Westbury sophomore Kim Weathers (Wyandanch, N.Y.) knocked down a three-pointer to make it a one point game. Weathers added nine points in the following six minutes, as the Panthers pulled ahead by one, 14-13, with 8:55 left on the clock.
Panthers sophomore Ruth Vargas (Harlem, N.Y.) converted a pair of free throws at the 4:17 mark to give Old Westbury its' largest lead of the day, 24-20. Both teams exchanged baskets in the closing minutes and with just thirty-three seconds showing on the clock Mount senior
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) nailed a shot from downtown to deadlock the game, 27-27, going into the locker room.
Horvers knocked down another three-pointer just 14 seconds into the second half, as the Knights opened the half with an 21-3 run that put them on top, 48-30, at the 14:06 mark. Horvers and classmate
Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) combined for eighteen points during the run.
A foul by Mount senior
Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) sent Old Westbury junior Antoinette Jolly (Inwood, N.Y.) to the free throw line with 7:01 left in the game. Jolly knocked down both free throws to make it a twelve point game, 54-42. The
Knights responded quickly and pushed their advantage back up to as many as 16 around the five minute mark.
The Panthers continued to challenge for the lead in the closing minutes of the half and with 1:36 left on the clock, sophomore Deslyn Applewhaite (Brooklyn, N.Y.) converted a jumper to cut the Mount's lead to eleven, 60-29. The Knights went five of eight from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.
Mocanu led all scorers with 20 points, while Horvers followed right behind with 19 points. Mount junior
Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) also reached double-digits with 10 points in addition to grabbing a team-high nine rebounds.
Applewhaite recorded a double-double for Old Westbury, with 13 points and 13 boards. Weathers added 10 points for the Panthers.
In their final away game of the regular season, the Knights will face the College of Mount Saint Vincent on Tuesday, February 7. The game is set for 7:00 p.m.
