PATCHOGUE, N.Y. - Making the first Skyline Conference Championship appearance in program history, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team fell short in their championship bid, dropping a 3-0 decision to St. Joseph's College on Sunday afternoon.
A St. Joseph's corner kick just six minutes into the game resulted in a goal, as senior John Dettori (Bay Shore, N.Y.) finished a ball from teammate Terrence Dzus (Central Islip, N.Y.). Over the ensuing fifteen minutes, both teams saw limited scoring opportunities as they settled into play.
With 23:18 elapsed in the first, the Golden Eagles tacked on their second of the day. Following a scramble in the box, Dettori moved the ball ahead to senior Craig Ceruti (Shoreham, N.Y.). Ceruti was able to beat Mount junior goalkeeper
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.), as St. Joseph's jumped ahead by two.
The Knights opened up the second half with their best scoring chance. Mount junior
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) placed a shot on net, but St. Joseph's goalkeeper senior Chris Muhs (West Babylon, N.Y.) was up to the test. With less than two minutes to play in the game, the Golden Eagles went up by three. Dettori dribbled past Darling, who was running out to break up the play, and put the ball into the back of the goal to account for his second of the day.
Darling tallied four saves, while Muhs finished with three.
After concluding the regular season with an overall record of 11-8-1, the Knights will await a potential bid to the ECAC Tournament.
