Box Score BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team won its' fifth straight Skyline Conference game with a 61-43 victory over Polytechnic Institute of New York University on Thursday evening. Now in the midst of their Skyline competition the Knights are 14-2 overall and 7-0 in the conference. The Fighting Blue Jays drop to 6-9 on the season and 2-5 in Skyline play.
With both teams struggling to establish a solid lead in the opening minutes of play, Mount freshman
Kristina Nieves (Fair Lawn, N.J.) nailed a free throw at the 13:07 mark to push her team ahead by six, 16-10. NYU Poly sophomore Tabitha Larsen (Ramsey, N.J.) responded with one from downtown and the Fighting Blue Jays quickly tacked on three more points to tie things up at 16-16.
Once again, Mount senior
Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) ignited the Knights as she knocked down a jumper with 11:08 left on the clock to break the deadlock and spurn an 8-0 run. In the closing minutes of the first half, the Knights were able to convert 15 points off of the Fighting Blue Jays' turnovers and the held a commanding 36-22 lead at the break.
Up by 14 at the break the Knights used a balanced offensive effort in the second half to maintain their lead. Seven players added to the scoreboard in the second half for the Knights, including Mocanu with six points, Horvers with five points and sophomore
Rachel Perrone (Poughquag, N.Y.) with four points.
With 13:36 on the clock, Mount junior
Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) dished the ball to Horvers who released the ball from behind the three-point arc. Horvers drained the shot to reach the 1,000 point mark in her career at the Mount and she is now in the record books with 1,001 career points.
Mount senior
Kelly Dempsey (Hicksville, N.Y.) knocked down a jumper with 5:38 left in the game to move the score to 61-33, however the Knights would remain scoreless in the waning minutes of the half.
Mocanu led the Knights with 14 points, while also recording five steals and Horvers chipped in with eight points.
Rachel Perrone added 12 points in addition to grabbing a team-high eight rebounds.
NYU Poly senior Margaux PIckell (Howell, N.J.) scored a team-high 17 points and also collected eight boards. Larsen finished with nine points.
Looking to keep their unbeaten streak in the Skyline Conference alive, the Knights will face St. Joseph's College on Saturday. The game will be played in the Kaplan Center at 2:00 in part one of a doubleheader.
