NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Behind a pair of goals from sophomore
Sean Lockwood (Manahawkin, N.J.), the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team defeated Purchase College on Saturday by a score of 2-0. The Knights improved to 4-3-1 overall and moved to 2-0-0 in Skyline play.
Lockwood opened the scoring in the 33rd minute, finishing off a nice play by junior
Christian Redl (Poughkeepsie, N.Y.). Moving forward on the left side, Redl beat a Purchase defender near the sideline and cut towards the box. From there, he served a cross to the far post, where Lockwood headed it back across the mouth of the goal. The ball kissed off the far post and into the side netting for a 1-0 Mount lead.
Lockwood would add an insurance goal in the 65th minute, when his shot from 25 yards floated over the goalkeeper's head and underneath the crossbar.
The Knights would also get a strong performance from sophomore
Matt Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.). He made three saves for his fourth shutout of the season, tying a Mount Saint Mary College season record.
The Mount returns to action on Wednesday, September 28 with a Skyline game against Maritime College. Game time is set for 7:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
