Knights Storm Past Lightning

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Turning in one of their more impressive performances of the season, Mount Saint Mary College blew out Lehman College, 79-21, in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon in the Kaplan Center. The Knights, now the winners of 15 in a row, improved to 21-2 overall, while the Lightning dropped to 15-9.

With the game tied at six in the early going, junior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) jump started a 15-0 run with a bucket at the 14:07 mark. A pair of free throws from Mocanu at the 9:40 mark completed the run and sent the Knights to a 21-6 advantage.

Then, leading 29-12 near the six-minute mark, junior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) and senior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) combined to score the next ten points, Horvers with a pair of three-pointers and Tice with a layup and two free throws. Sophomore Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) closed out the first-half scoring with a three-pointer, sending the Knights to the locker room with a 42-13 cushion.

Mount Saint Mary would hold Lehman without a field goal for the opening twelve minutes of the second half, eventually pushing the lead to 56 on back-to-back buckets from sophomore Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.). Lehman sophomore Paula Robinson (Bronx, N.Y.) finally broke the drought with a jumper at the 7:44 mark, one of only three field goals for the Lightning in the half. The Knights would maintain at least a 56-point lead over the final minutes and finished with a 58-point victory.

Mocanu led five Knights in double figures with 14 points. It was an efficient afternoon for the junior, who connected on 6-of-8 from the field and added five rebounds to go along with three assists. Horvers tallied 13 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Tice totaled 12 points, seven rebounds, and five steals. Hartnett and McCullough each added 10 points, with McCullough contributing a team-high six assists.

Lehman junior Jaleesa Gordon (Queens, N.Y.) led the Lightning with 10 points and eight boards. The visitors had just eight field goals and shot 16.3-percent from the field. The Lightning also suffered from 23 turnovers.

Mount Saint Mary held a tremendous 59-27 advantage on the glass and nabbed 14 steals. The Knights shot 42.4-percent for the contest and dished out 22 assists.

The Knights close out their Skyline regular season schedule this week. They'll travel to Purchase on Wednesday for a 7:00 p.m. start before hosting St. Joseph's College on Saturday at 2:00 p.m.
