Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – William Paterson University proved their top ten national ranking to be valid on Friday evening, defeating Mount Saint Mary College by a final score of 74-41 in a non-conference matchup of top Atlantic Region teams. The Pioneers improved to 10-0 on the year, while the Knights dropped to 9-2 overall.
William Paterson jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead, but the Mount responded with the next seven and a jumper by senior
Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) at the 15:28 mark made it 7-5, Knights. On the ensuing possession, Pioneer junior Lindsey Callander (Branchburg, N.J.) drained a three-pointer to give William Paterson a lead they would not relinquish for the remainder of the contest.
Leading 23-17 with 8:36 to play in the opening stanza, the Pioneers closed the half on a 15-4 run and went to the locker room with a 38-21 lead. The visitors scored the first seven points of the second half, putting away all thoughts of a Mount comeback.
Callander and senior April Smith (Barnegat, N.J.) led the way for William Paterson with 16 points each. Callander was red hot from downtown, connecting on 4-of-4 from three. Smith hit on 7-of-13 from the field and completed a double-double with 12 rebounds. Sophomore Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J.) also completed a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards.
Mount junior
Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) was the only Knight in double figures with 14 points. Senior
Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) was limited to just eight points on 4-of-15 from the field.
William Paterson shot 50-percent for the game and scored 24 points off of 19 Mount turnovers. The Knights shot just 28.8-percent from the floor. The Pioneers held a 47-29 advantage on the glass and a 17-2 advantage in second-chance points.
The Knights close the opening semester at 9-2. Their next scheduled contest is January 7 at Old Westbury.
