Defense Powers Knights Past NYU

Box Score NEWBURGH, N.Y. – A stingy defensive performance by the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team propelled them to a 49-37 win over New York University. The Knights limited the Violets to shooting just 21.3-percent from the field en route to their fourth win of the season. The win improves the Knights to 4-1, while NYU moves to 4-1.

After NYU senior Tana Bertino drilled a three pointer to open up the game, both teams struggled to find their range. Mount freshman Kristina Nieves (Fair Lawn, N.J.) converted a lay-up with 11:01 remaining in the first half to break a 4-4 tie and by halftime the Knights were on top 20-14.

With just under ten minutes remaining in the game Bertino knocked down a pair of free throws to bring the Violets to within five, 33-28. Mount senior Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) hit a jumper to respond and ignite a 5-0 run for the Knights.

Bertino netted a free throw with 1:30 left in the game to bring decrease the Knights lead to seven (44-37), but this is as close as they would get. Mount junior Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) and classmate Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.Y.) combined to hit five free throws in the closing minute of the game to seal the win.

Mount Saint Mary College senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) led all scorers with a game-high 12 points, while Nieves chipped in with 10. The Knights received eight points from senior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) and Metzger added seven. Junior Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Knights on the glass, grabbing nine rebounds.

Bertino was the only Violet to reach double-digit scoring with eleven. Senior Shelby Coon was dominant on the boards, collecting a game-high 15 rebounds.

The Knights will open up their Skyline Conference season on Thursday as they host Purchase College. Game time is set at 6:00 p.m.
