Knights Split at Amherst Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 AMHERST, Mass. - The Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team salvaged a weekend split with a 66-52 defeat of Norwich University on Sunday afternoon at the Amherst College Tip-Off Tournament.  The Knights fell to St. Lawrence University, 76-69, in Saturday's opening round game.

Against Norwich, the Knights dominated the opening half and closed with a 7-0 run to lead 31-19 at the break.  Mount Saint Mary led by no fewer than eight points for the entire second half and a late 10-0 put the game well out of reach.

Senior Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) led the Mount with 12 points, while junior Charneice McCullough (Wyandanch, N.Y.) added 10 points, a team-high seven rebounds, and three assists.

Norwich freshman Aliah Curry (Windsor, Mass.) hit on four three-pointers and finished with a game-high 17 points.  Senior Karissa Doyon (Beecher Falls, Vt.) added 11 points for the Cadets.

In the opening game against St. Lawrence, the Knights conceded a stunning 47 points in the opening half and trailed by 17 at the break.  Mount Saint Mary would sneak back into the game in the second half, however, and a three-point play by junior Becky Metzger (Point Pleasant, N.J.) at the 6:56 mark capped a 10-0 run that made the score, 63-56, with just under seven minutes to play.

With her team still trailing by nine, Metzger finished off another run for the Knights, this one a 7-0 burst that brought them to within two (70-68) as the clock ticked under two minutes.  St. Lawrence answered with the next four points, however, and held on for the 76-69 victory.

Junior Kate Hartnett (Floral Park, N.Y.) led the Mount with 18 points on 5-of-10 from the field and 8-of-10 at the line.  Horvers hit three three-pointers and finished with 17 points, while Metzger provided a big spark off the bench with 14 points in just 13 minutes.  Senior Jen Mocanu (Belford, N.J.) also reached double figures with 10 points.

Sophomore Kelly Legg (Fairport, N.Y.) led the Saints with 16 points and seven rebounds.  Senior Katherine Edgerton (Shelburne, Vt.) matched Legg with seven rebounds to go along with her 15 points, while senior Casey Capello (Hanover, Mass.) drained 5-of-10 from long range to also finish with 15 points.

Horvers was named to the all-tournament team for Mount Saint Mary.

Now at 2-1 overall, the Knights face another non-conference test on Tuesday with a trip to Montclair State University.  The game is set for an 8:00 p.m. start on November 22.
