NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College senior
Francesco Marando (Slate Hill, N.Y.) scored the game-tying goal in the 55th minute as the Knights tied with the College of Mount Saint Vincent, 1-1, on Wednesday evening. The Mount's record now stands at 0-8-2 overall (0-2-2 Skyline), while the Dolphins moved to 2-2-2 overall (1-1-1 Skyline).
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, freshman
Bobby Kozlowski (Newburgh, N.Y.) did well to save a ball from going out of bounds. Kozlowski played the ball to the middle of the field, where sophomore
Michael Toscano (Goshen, N.Y.) touched it to junior Mike Del Rosso (Washingtonville, N.Y.). Del Rosso passed vertically through a pair of defenders and Marando ran on to the pass to set up a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The senior calmly slid the ball inside the right post to tie the game.
Mount Saint Vincent opened the scoring in the 23rd minute on a header by senior J.R. Downey (Highland Falls, N.Y.). Junior Hugo Hernandez (West Harrison, N.Y.) found freshman Justin Zumbado (New York, N.Y.) on the right wing and Zumbado played a nice cross to the middle of the field.
Mount Saint Mary freshman goalkeeper Matthew Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) was excellent once again for the Knights, making 13 saves to preserve the tie. His scrambling save in the 81st minute following a Mount Saint Vincent corner helped force the game to extra time.
Up next for the Mount is a home date with Farmingdale State College on Saturday, October 2. The revised game time for Saturday is now 1:30 p.m.
