BRONX, N.Y. – Playing in their third consecutive overtime contest, the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team lost another heartbreaking Skyline Conference game, this time to Maritime College by a score of 2-1. The Knights fell to 0-8-1 overall and to 0-2-1 in the conference.
Maritime sophomore Ryan Nugent (Carmel, N.Y.) scored the game-winner in the sixth minute of the first overtime period. A bouncing ball in the box was misplayed by the Mount keeper, allowing Nugent to fire home a shot from close range to send the Privateers to victory.
The Privateers only reached overtime because of a late goal by junior Tom Federico (Islip, N.Y.). Federico found the back of the net after a rebound with just 12:35 remaining.
Mount Saint Mary opened the scoring in the 31st minute, as sophomore
Drew Altieri (Voorheesville, N.Y.) broke a long scoreless streak for the Knights. Altieri released a strong shot that hit the Maritime goalkeeper before banking into the net off a defender.
Mount freshman goalkeeper Matthew Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) made seven stops in defeat. Maritime sophomore keeper Michael Vanadia (Commack, N.Y.) picked up the win by making five saves.
