Quick Start Propels Mount to Win

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Mount Saint Mary College opened the game on an 18-0 run and cruised the rest of the way during 78-43 drubbing of SUNY College at Old Westbury on Saturday. Senior Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored a team-high 12 points for the Blue Knights, who improved to 19-4 overall (15-1 Skyline). For the Panthers (11-12, 6-10 Skyline), it was their fifth loss in a row.

Sophomore Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) started the Mount on the right foot, drilling a three-pointer from the corner just eleven seconds in. Sangster and junior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) combined for the next eight points before Horvers nailed another triple to make it 14-0. Sangster knocked down a pair of free throws and then it was sophomore Bethany Deer (Guilderland, N.Y.) who closed out the run with bucket in the paint.

Mount Saint Mary led 43-17 at the half and pushed their lead to as many as 42 in the second twenty minutes. A three-pointer from Old Westbury freshman Krystina Agard (Queens, N.Y.) just before the buzzer made the final score, 78-43.

Sangster, one game removed from scoring her 1,000th career point, just missed a double-double with 12 points and 9 rebounds. Tice was also just shy of a double-double, totaling 11 points and 8 boards. Sophomore Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) chipped in with 10 points.

Agard led all scorers with 25 points, but was the lone source of offense for the Panthers. The freshman was 7-for-15 from the floor, but the rest of the team connected on just 5-of-29 field goal attempts. Old Westbury shot 27.3-percent for the game.

Mount Saint Mary, now winners of eight games in a row, will hit the road for a Skyline Conference game with Yeshiva University on Wednesday, February 17. The tip is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. The Blue Knights close out the regular season next Saturday when they'll play host to first-place Farmingdale beginning at 2:00 p.m.
