NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Senior
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) scored 18 points, including the 1,000th point of her collegiate career, to lead Mount Saint Mary College to a 74-44 victory over the Polytechnic Institute of NYU. The Blue Knights improved to 18-4 overall (14-1 Skyline) with their seventh win in a row, while the Blue Jays dropped to 10-12 overall (6-10 Skyline).
Needing 12 points to reach 1,000, Sangster dropped in 10 points during a productive first half that saw the Mount take a 36-20 advantage to the locker room. On the first possession of the second half, Sangster knocked down a baseline jumper on a feed from fellow senior
Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.). The Syracuse native, who became the 11th player in recorded school history to reach the milestone, received a warm round of applause from the Kaplan Center crowd and hugs from her teammates.
Mount Saint Mary extended their advantage throughout the rest of the second half and finished with their widest lead of the contest. The Blue Knights shot 59-percent in the second half to finish at 50-percent for the game.
Sangster led all scorers and grabbed 6 rebounds, while shooting 8-of-15 from the floor. Junior
Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) posted her fifth double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 boards. Tice also blocked 4 shots. Sophomore
Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) also reached double figures with 10 points.
Sophomore Kristin Leitheuser (Millbrook, N.Y.) led NYU-Poly with 13 points, but shot just 4-of-13 from the field and committed 6 turnovers. Sophomore Megan Bosi (New Milford, N.J.) was the only other Blue Jay in double figures with 12 points. Sophomore Margaux Pickell (Howell, N.J.) had 5 points, 10 boards, and 5 assists.
Up next for the Mount is SUNY College at Old Westbury. The Blue Knights will host the Panthers on Saturday, February 13 as part of a double-header. The women's game is scheduled to tip at 1:00 p.m. with the men's game to follow at 3:30 p.m.
