Mount Splits at Hudson Valley Tournament

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The Mount Saint Mary College women's volleyball team split a pair of matches at the Hudson Valley Tournament on Saturday. The Knights (15-8) fell to Vassar (12-10) in straight sets before rebounding to defeat Bard (6-13) in four sets.

The Knights were in all three sets against Vassar, but still fell 25-22, 25-17, and 25-19. Freshman Kaylene Pennings (Minisink, N.Y.) led the Knights with seven kills, while sophomore Mary Ann Raftery (Atlantic Beach, N.Y.) was right behind with six kills. Sophomore Lauren Halverson (Patchogue, N.Y.) had 20 assists and also totaled a team-high 14 digs.

With the first two sets in hand against Bard (25-8 and 25-19), the Knights dropped the third set (25-22) before closing out the match in set four (25-16). Pennings led the way once again, this time racking up 13 kills to go along with three aces and three blocks. Raftery and junior Teresa Sorrentino (Bellerose, N.Y.) were next with seven kills each. Sorrentino added 10 digs, while Raftery pitched in with nine. Halverson also had 10 digs to go along with her 31 assists and five aces, but it was junior Heather Schaeffer (Hopewell Junction, N.Y.) who posted a team-high 12 digs.

The Mount will travel to William Paterson University for a non-conference match on Tuesday, October 19 at 7:00 p.m. The Knights return home to close out their Skyline Conference schedule on Saturday, October 23 with matches against Mount Saint Vincent and Old Westbury.
