PURCHASE, N.Y. - The Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team earned their first win of the season, posting a 3-0 victory over Skyline Conference foe, Purchase College. The win moves the Knights to 1-11-2 overall and to 1-4-2 in league play. The Panthers now stand at 1-10-2 overall and 0-6-1 in the conference.
The Knights were eager to score in the first half and totaled 18 shots to Purchase's one. The Mount took a 2-0 lead into the half after goals by junior
Matt Glaviano (Brewster, N.Y.) and senior
Francesco Marando (Slate Hill, N.Y.). Glaviano headed in a corner kick served by sophomore
Matt Pagano (Mahopac, N.Y.) in the 23rd minute of play to give the Knights a 1-0 advantage. In the 38th minute, Marando netted the ball from 15 yards out off an assist from Pagano. The Mount held a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks through the first half.
In the second half, the Mount continued to test Purchase senior goalkeeper David Kurzweil (Bedford, N.Y.), who finished with 14 saves on the evening. The Knights tallied eleven shots in the second half to total a season high 29 shots on the night. The victory was solidified when Purchase College scored an own goal in the 50th minute to increase the Mount's lead to 3-0.
Marando lead the team with a total of ten shots and freshman
Brandon Mincher (Bayport, N.Y.) rattled off four shots. Freshman Matthew Darling (Staatsburg, N.Y.) earned the shutout in net, recording three saves.
The Knights will host St. Joseph's College on Saturday in a Skyline Conference match-up. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m. on Kaplan Field.
