NEWBURGH, NY – In the home opener for the Mount Saint Mary College men's soccer team, the Blue Knights played Albertus Magnus College to a scoreless draw. The record for both teams now stands at 1-0-1.
The Blue Knights outshot the Falcons by a margin of 16-10 but couldn't find the back of the net for the entire afternoon. Perhaps the best chance for the Mount came in the final minute of regulation when freshman
Drew Altieri (Voorheesville, N.Y.) clanged the crossbar from the top of the eighteen. Sophomore
Francesco Marando (Slate Hill, N.Y.) also had a close call in the final minutes, scooting a low shot off the side netting.
Senior goalkeeper
Paul Aries (Nashua, N.H.) made several key stops for the Blue Knights and collected his first shutout of the season. He made seven saves. Senior Gerald O'Connor (Hamden, Conn.) matched the effort of Aries at the other end, making eight saves to earn his second shutout in as many games. The Falcons have yet to allow a goal on the young season.
Up next for the Blue Knights is Hudson Valley rival, Vassar College. Mount Saint Mary will head to Poughkeepsie to take on the Brewers at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 8.
