Mount Saint Mary Remains Unbeaten in Skyline

FARMINGDALE, NY – In a showdown between the top two teams in the Skyline Conference, junior Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) scored a team-high 14 points as the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team won its twelfth straight contest with a 64-40 victory at Farmingdale State College on Saturday afternoon. The Mount bumps its record to 16-4 overall and to 13-0 in the Skyline Conference, while Farmingdale dropped to 14-5 and 12-2 in Skyline play.

Farmingdale jumped out to a five point lead (7-2) in the early part of the contest. Trailing by five, the Mount went on a 9-0 run that included a three point basket from freshman Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) that gave the Blue Knights their first lead of the contest at 9-7. Junior Chrissy Zrowka (Brick, N.J.) kept the scoring run going with a layup of her in the paint. After the Rams cut the lead back to one, the Mount went on another run, this time of ten points, to make it 21-10. The Blue Knights would lead by as many as eighteen and carried a 35-19 advantage into the break. The Blue Knights shot 46.9-percent in the first half, while the Rams shot a woeful 17.2-percent.

Farmingdale junior Tiffara Steward (Elmont, N.Y.) drained a three point basket to start the second half, kicking off an 11-2 for the Rams that made the score 39-30. But Farmingdale would not get any closer for the rest of the way. Paggi answered the Farmingdale streak with a triple to end the hopes of any comeback by the home team. The Mount won the game going away, 64-40.

In addition to Paggi's 14 points, junior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) tallied 10 points and had a game-high 18 rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Horvers chipped in with 9, while Zrowka totaled 8 assists to go along with 6 points. The Blue Knights continued to excel at the defensive end of the floor, limiting the Rams to just 18.2-percent shooting for the game. The Mount has held its last five opponents to an average of 44.0 points per game.

Junior Kimberly Blakney (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Rams with 14 points, but shot just 3-for-20 from the field. Her teammate, junior Gabrielle Green (North Babylon, N.Y.), chipped in with 7 points. Farmingdale was held to its lowest point total of the season.

The Blue Knights will have only a short time to prepare for their next game which is on Monday, February 9. The game will be a Skyline Conference contest at the Polytechnic Institute of NYU in Brooklyn, N.Y. and is set for a 7:00 p.m. start. This will be the second meeting in six days between the two teams. The Blue Knights defeated the Blue Jays 82-46 last Wednesday night at the Kaplan Center.
