Sixteen Straight For The Mount

NEW YORK, NY – Mount Saint Mary College junior Meredith Paggi (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) led the Blue Knights with 21 points as the women's basketball team won its sixteenth game in a row, coasting to a 75-27 victory over Yeshiva University on Wednesday night. The Mount improved their record to 20-4 overall and remained perfect in the Skyline Conference at 17-0, while Yeshiva dropped to 3-21 and 0-17 in Skyline play.

The Mount scored the contest's first fifteen points. Yeshiva finally found the scoreboard at the thirteen minute mark when sophomore Shir Fuchs (Herzilya, Israel) buried a pair of free throws. Thirty nine seconds later, sophomore Renee Ashkenazi (Deal, N.J.) drained the Maccabees' first basket. Two free throws from freshman Sarah Joseph (East Hampton, Conn.) and a triple by freshman Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) would ignite a 14-0 run by the Mount. The Mount would lead by a score of 29-5 at the 5:56 mark of the first half and carried a 33-7 advantage at the intermission. The Blue Knights held Yeshiva to only 9.5-percent shooting for the first half and connected on 32.4-percent of their own attempts.

The Mount came out firing in the second half as they received two layups from Paggi and another from Horvers. With the Mount leading 54-13 at the 10:48 mark, Yeshiva responded with the next seven points to cut the lead to thirty four, but couldn't get any closer. With the victory, the Mount is guaranteed their eighth consecutive twenty win season as well as their tenth straight Skyline Conference regular season crown.

Paggi shot 8-for-15 from the field, 1-for-4 from downtown, and 4-for-4 from the free throw line to finish with 21 points for the game. Horvers chipped in with 13 more points to add on to her fine rookie season. The Mount shot 38.6-percent for the game and continued to dominate at the defensive side, holding its second opponent in three games to under 25 points.

The Maccabees were led by Fuchs, who scored a game-high 9 points. Yeshiva shot just 23.4-percent for the contest.

The Mount will close the regular season at the Kaplan Center on Saturday February 21 against the SUNY College at Old Westbury. The game is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
