NEWBURGH, N.Y. – Junior
Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) scored 17 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to lead Mount Saint Mary College to a 65-54, non-conference victory over Baruch College on Saturday in the Kaplan Center. The Blue Knights improved to 7-2 overall, while the Bearcats bumped down to 6-2.
Leading by three (43-40) with just under ten minutes to play in the game, the Blue Knights expanded their lead to double digits with an 8-0 run. Senior
Catie Biordi (Beacon, N.Y.) splashed back-to-back three pointers, the second of which gave the Mount a 51-40 lead with 8:14 remaining.
Baruch senior Anika Sierk (Hamburg, Germany) rallied the Bearcats, scoring the next four points of the game to cut the lead to seven. A long pass from junior Monique Salmon (Bronx, N.Y.) sprung free junior Megan Bouwens (White Lake, Mich.) for a breakaway layup to make the score 51-46 at the 5:32 mark.
A put back by Mount sophomore Bethany Deer (Guilderland, N.Y.) broke up the Baruch run and kicked off another 8-0 run for the Blue Knights that put the game out of reach. A bucket by
Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) at the 3:31 mark made it 59-46 and the Bearcats wouldn't threaten again.
To go along with her double-double, Tice filled out the stat sheet with 3 assists, 3 blocks, and 2 steals. Sophomore
Natalie Garbie (Bayville, N.J.) connected three times from behind the arc and finished with 15 points. Biordi totaled 14 points on the strength of her back-to-back triples and Sangster barely missed a double-double of her own with 10 points and 9 boards.
Bouwens led Baruch with 17 points and 9 rebounds. The junior shot 7-for-15, but was the only Bearcat who didn't struggle from the floor – they shot just 33.9% for the game. Sierk reached double figures with 11, but made just 3-of-10 attempts. Senior Christina Kelly (Bronx, N.Y.) was limited to 4 points on 1-of-8 shooting, but still collected 12 rebounds. Senior Kalea Davis (Bronx, N.Y.) also grabbed 12 rebounds, but was held to just 5 points.
Baruch cleaned up the glass, out-rebounding the Blue Knights by a margin of 51-39. It was the turnovers, however, that hurt the Bearcats. Entering the game with a +8 turnover margin, Baruch committed a season-high 27 turnovers as compared to just 16 for the Mount.
Up next for the Blue Knights is Yeshiva University. The Skyline Conference game is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Monday, December 14 inside the Kaplan Center.
