New Paltz Frustrates Mount

NEWBURGH, N.Y. – In a game plagued by turnovers, the Mount Saint Mary College women's basketball team dropped a non-conference game to SUNY New Paltz, 63-56, on Wednesday evening. The Blue Knights dropped to 1-1 on the young season while the Hawks improved to 1-0.

With the game tied at 19 and 3:26 to play in the first half, New Paltz senior Nicole Sarcone (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored the next five points of the game, draining a three-pointer at the 3:00 mark and then a pair of free throws with 70 seconds remaining in the half. The Hawks extended their lead to seven with another set of free throws before Mount Saint Mary senior Shannon Sangster (Syracuse, N.Y.) brought the Blue Knights back to within five (26-21) on the final possession of the half.

New Paltz extended their lead to as many as nine in the opening minutes of the second half, but the Blue Knights jumped back into the game with an 8-0 run. Back-to-back three pointers by sophomore Amanda Horvers (Kingston, N.Y.) made the score 32-31 with 17:23 to play.

Just as quickly as the Blue Knights had rallied to get in the game, New Paltz responded with a lightning quick 7-0 run to take an eight point advantage. Mount Saint Mary would not get closer than four for the remainder of the contest and the Hawks eased to a 63-56 victory.

Sangster led the Mount with 16 points on 6-of-7 shooting. Horvers joined Sangster in double figures, connecting three times from three-point range for a total of 13 points. Senior Jess Tice (Altamont, N.Y.) also totaled double figures with 10 and just missed a double-double with 9 boards.

Sarcone led the Hawks with 13 points and senior Maggie Farrell (Hillsdale, N.Y) chipped in 11. Farrell also pulled down a team-high 8 rebounds.

Both teams were plagued by turnovers for the entire night. The Blue Knights finished with 25 turnovers while the Hawks totaled 22. New Paltz also out-rebounded the Mount by a margin of 41-32.

Mount Saint Mary will head to the Emmanuel College Invitational for their next contest. The Blue Knights will take on the University of California at Santa Cruz beginning at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 21.
